Driving In The UK For Visitors

A very popular option for many visitors who come to the UK is to actually bring their own car with them or to rent a car when they arrive in the country, but driving in the UK can be a little different to driving in other countries. As a whole the roads are quite civilized and most drivers will do so in a considerate way, there are some pitfalls and hazards to be aware of when taking to the roads.

The first and most obvious thing for many drivers coming to the UK is that the cars in this country drive on the left, and will generally have the driver taking the right seat in the car, which is the opposite of what most countries will do. This can mean having to adjust for those who are renting cars to try and reverse their standard way of driving, and for those bringing their own cars then being aware that visibility may be less than if they were driving in their own country.

Another thing to bear in mind when driving in the UK is that the speed limits are in miles per hour, and these limits are quite rigid, with those caught breaking such speed limits likely to receive fines for doing so. Most visitors will drive quite conservatively when going to a new country, which is a smart move because driving carelessly can have grave consequences, especially when it comes to the smaller narrow roads in many of the tourist areas across the country.

Rush hour in the UK can be particularly busy in many towns, and for those who are unfamiliar with driving in the UK, avoiding driving at these times can be a good move, as there will be large numbers of cars on the roads, and drivers will naturally get more frustrated driving at this time of day. In quieter areas, this may not be quite as bad, but in the cities it can be very busy indeed.

Driving around the UK is a great way to have freedom and control over the schedule of a holiday, and with some roads traversing some truly beautiful scenic areas it can also give the opportunity to see a lot of sensational parts of the country that would not normally be seen in most organized trips.
